Troop 24 History

Way back on February 11, 1924, a group of citizens in the New Freedom community got together and chartered a Boy Scout troop. This original troop was Troop 1 and was started with 19 scouts, a scoutmaster, 2 assistant scoutmasters and a troop committee of 4 men. Listed on this original charter application were Reverend L. E. Teter as scoutmaster, M. E. Smith and Harry Miller as assistants and the charter organization was a Group of Citizens. Troop 1 remained active until 1926.

On June 20, 1930, Troop 24 received it's first charter. This troop was again sponsored by a Group of Citizens until 1935 when the New Freedom Lion's Club became the sponsor and has remained our sponsor since.

Troop 24 earned its operating capital through monthly paper drives (until April 2019) and from snowball sales at the New Freedom Lion's Club carnival held each July. The scouts earn credit by working the snowball stand and that credit goes to help defray the cost of summer camp.

Troop 24 has been a successful participant in the community through lots of hard work by the scouts and the support by the many adult leaders, parents and the business community. The scouts of Troop 24 will continue to be a intregal part of the community as it strives to remain true to the spirit of scouting.
